Appointment length: 30–45 minutes (initial appointment)

Medical weight loss treatments are clinician-led programmes that combine lifestyle support with prescription-based options where appropriate, to help eligible adults lose weight safely and sustainably. They may suit you if you've struggled to achieve results with diet and activity alone, have weight affecting your health or confidence, and want structured medical oversight and accountability. Your initial appointment typically takes 30–45 minutes and focuses on understanding your goals, medical history, current medications, and whether you meet the criteria for treatment. This service isn't suitable for everyone. It may not be appropriate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of eating disorders, certain significant gastrointestinal conditions, or if weight loss medication is contraindicated based on your medical history or current medicines. If you're looking for rapid or "guaranteed" results, we'll be honest about what's realistic and safe, and discuss alternative support or referral if needed.

What Happens During Treatment

You'll complete a health questionnaire and we'll take baseline measurements (e.g. weight, BMI, and where relevant waist measurement) and discuss your eating patterns, activity, sleep, stress, and previous weight loss attempts. We'll explore your goals using a supportive, non-judgemental approach, and explain the available options: nutrition targets, behaviour strategies, and — if clinically suitable — prescription weight loss medication under a UK prescriber. If medication is appropriate, the prescriber will complete a formal assessment, explain benefits and risks, confirm contraindications, and provide a prescribing plan with follow-up schedule. You'll receive written guidance on how to use your treatment, what side effects to expect, and when to seek urgent medical help.

Expected Results

Weight loss is typically gradual and varies between individuals. Many people notice reduced appetite and improved control of cravings early on, with visible changes building over weeks to months alongside nutrition and activity changes.

How long results may last: Ongoing results usually require continued adherence to the programme; weight regain can occur if treatment is stopped and habits aren't maintained.

Downtime & Recovery

There's usually no downtime.

Side Effects, Risks & Contraindications

Possible side effects

  • Nausea, reduced appetite, constipation or diarrhoea (depending on the medication used)
  • Reflux, bloating, headache, fatigue or mild dizziness
  • Temporary redness or tenderness at the injection site, if an injectable medication is used

Risks

  • Persistent vomiting, dehydration, or worsening reflux
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Pancreatitis symptoms (severe abdominal pain)
  • Effects on mood in vulnerable individuals
  • Possible interactions with other medications

Contraindications

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Under-18s
  • A history of eating disorders
  • Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • A history of pancreatitis
  • Certain endocrine conditions or severe gastrointestinal disease
  • Relevant personal or family history that makes a specific medicine unsuitable — assessed individually by the prescriber

Aftercare

Follow your plan exactly as prescribed and attend scheduled reviews so progress, side effects, and measurements can be monitored. Prioritise hydration, regular protein intake, and fibre to reduce gastrointestinal side effects, and limit alcohol if advised. Avoid "crash diets" and unregulated weight loss products or laxatives. If you miss doses, do not double up — follow the prescriber's instructions. Seek urgent medical advice if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, fainting, yellowing of the skin/eyes, chest pain, or significant mood changes. Continue using contraception where relevant and inform the clinic immediately if you become pregnant.
